Alert: FDA Recalls Dog Food With Fatal Aflatoxin Levels After 70+ Dogs Die

Sportmix Pet Food products are currently being recalled after the FDA was notified about extraordinary levels of aflatoxins and multiple dog deaths. It was on January 11, 2021 that Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. expanded the recall.

The recall currently consists of all pet foods that contain corn and was manufactured in the company’s Oklahoma plant with expiration dates on or before July 9, 2022. The FDA is aware of more than 70 plus dogs who have died and more than 80 that had gotten sick after eating Sportmix pet food. Thanks to the research completed by the Missouri Department of Agriculture and the University of Mizzou the FDA was able to take immediate action.

If you or someone you know has been feeding their dog one of the affected Sportmix foods then you should stop immediately or notify them to stop immediately.

Here is how to understand if your dog’s food was impacted and what actions  to take.

What Are Aflatoxins?

Aflatoxins are toxins produced by the mold called Aspergillus Flavus. This mold at high levels can cause death and serious illness in pets. It’s produced in grains, mostly drought-stressed corn. With or without mold, Aspergillus Flavus can and its toxins can be present in dog good.

Symptoms of Aflatoxin Poisoning?

Here is what to look for:

  • Vomiting
  • Sluggishness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Yellow Tint to Eyes, Gums or Skin (Jaundice)

If your pet has been eating the recalled product, make sure to contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.
