Dachshund’s are tireless and vibrant with tons of energy. They’re ready for almost anything because they’re smart, vigilant with a large dog bark. Dachshunds have been known to be watchdogs and bred to be independent hunters of dangerous prey. They can be very brave, but a bit stubborn as well.  

Nutrition

Due to the long back that Dachshund puppies and adults have, you’ll need to be extremely cautious about allowing them to become overweight. Being overweight can also cause other health concerns that are typical in most breeds, but Dachshund’s are known to have ruptured or herniated discs when being overweight.

Grooming

You’ll need to make sure you’re always brushing your Dachshund since they’re shedders. However, the grooming for a Dachshund varies between the three coat types.

  • Smooth Haired: A wipe with a towel or hound glove should do the trick
  • Long Haired: Frequent brushing, depending on the thickness of the coat
  • Wire Haired: Over time just pluck and hand strip wired hairs.

Other than that, maintaining your Dachshunds grooming should be quite easy.

Exercise

Although Dachshund puppies and adults are quite small in size, they still require exercise. This is to help maintain strong muscles in order to protect their back.

Training

Adult Dachshunds are very intelligent and loyal, but at the same time can be independent and stubborn. When training your Dachshund puppies, you’ll need patience because they’re challenging to train. They love to give affection and receive affection. They do extremely well with reward-based training. You must be patient and consistent when training Dachshunds because they are sensitive with punishment and harsh commands.

Health

Dachshunds are known to be a healthy breed, they are expected to live between 12 – 16 years with a proper diet, exercise and care.
